# Math speed dating

To close out today’s lesson and assess students current ability to solve rational equations, I will present Page 3 of the Flipchart and ask students to determine the area of the given rectangle.

I may review with students for a moment to make sure they recall how to find the area and perimeter of a rectangle.

I thought I would have plenty of time to get them typed and printed before school started, but I didn't account for kids coming in to get help on making up their quizzes!

So, if you do see an error, let me know so I can fix it!

Them, students have 10 minutes to solve their problem and become an expert on how to explain the solution process to someone else. After ten minutes they will need to be the expert on the problem.

The answers are copied on the back of the card so that students can check their work.

My physical science students are currently working on determining the correct number of significant figures to use in different situations.

The first step is for them to be able to recognize how many significant figures there are in a number.

Once all of the students arrive I present Flipchart Rational Equations Day 2 (p.1-2) and explain the plan for class.Create a deck of cards that has a question on one side and the answer on the other side. Pass out the cards to students with the question side facing up. Instruct each student to solve the problem in front of them before checking their answer by flipping the card over. After I run them through my printer, I just snap them apart and put them in a small ziplock baggie for each group. Here's some action shots of my students during our speed dating adventure. At the end of each "mini date," you trade information in case you later decide you want to get in contact. If you don't think your students can handle the dating analogy, you can call this activity it's other common name: Quiz, Quiz, Trade.The purpose of speed dating is to meet as many people in as short an amount of time as possible. I instruct kids to figure out how many significant figures are in the number on their card and to check their answer with the back of the card. When you tell them to get up, they should find a partner. (Bonus points for stopping kids by ringing a bell like actual speed dating!In the few minutes you spend with the other person, you want to find something out about them and you want to trade information in case you decide to pursue things further in the future. Each partner should hold up their card for the other person to see. After both cards have been answered and discussed, the partners should trade cards. ) Or, you might end up like me and have to participate yourself.
